Daughter of Local 1414 Member Wins Prestigious IAM Scholarship

June/July 2005
Whitney Hsiong came to Local 1414’s May meeting to accept her four-year IAM college scholarship, presented by Grand Lodge Rep Don Whitaker. The funds should come in handy as she begins her studies at Harvey Mudd College in Southern California with a major in Electrical Engineering. Whitney, who attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, is the daughter of Local 1414 member Youmans Hsiong who works for SF Muni’s Woods Body Shop. Son of Local 1584 Member Wins IAM Scholarship

Local 1584 is proud to announce that this is the Local’s third scholarship winner in six years! Colin Lorentzen—son of Ian Lorentzen who works at Cargill Salt— has been awarded a four-year scholarship in the International IAM’s Scholarship Competition.

Colin got a 4.0 average from Washington High School in Fremont. He’ll receive $1,000 per year towards his college tuition. He plans to start UC Berkeley in the fall.

GLR Charles Tobay will present Colin’s award at Local 1584’s July 17 membership meeting.

What impact does the price of gas have on your life, job, vacation plans? What can be done about the high prices?

Abel Contreras Journeymen Tech, Hedrick’s Chevy—Local 653

“I spend quite a bit driving to work, because my commute from Visalia is 45 miles each way. I won’t go anywhere this year on vacation. I think there should be price controls on gas and the tax rate on the oil companies needs to be higher.”
